Raymond... I just love this. I would love to see Whitney go outside the " concert box" and do a concert of this kind of thought. Great re-mixes of her songs... With so many wonderful people doing remixes of great songs, i believe there is a calling for this... The idea of a song that is time tested and loved... wrapped in a new thought and presented in this forum is... dabomb! Dreamy!!!!!!!! Great work my dear.. Great work:)

Well put!! I want to see a day when emergency room admissions people don't have to ask for someone's insurance information. I want to see a day when a doctor's only concern is the best plan of action for their patients, without having to run something by a person in a cubicle a thousand miles away for approval. I think socialized medicine and higher education would make this a greater nation. As would people consuming less, eating less McDonalds, reading more, etc. But then I guess I am a dreamer. And that is what I am supposed to be doing, no?

Being a physician and a consumer of health care services I have a somwhat unique perspective on this. I too believe that healthcare should be available to everyone. For Atul Gawande to assert that healthcare in this country is not a major industry, (not only for physicians, but medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, insurers and hospitals non-profit and for profit alike) is disingeuous and misleading. Medicine and its' satellite industries have been businesses for a long time, and it is the entrepreneurial spirit of these institutions and the individuals that they are made up of that has driven the medical advances in this country that we and the rest of the world benefit from.
The medical systems in Cuba and Canada are good and cheap but they do not hold a candle to what we have here. If we have the public will and the cooperation of all of the factions involved, we can improve the "healthcare delivery system" here, but it is not as simple as information technology, and doctors working together and not "gaming" the system. It is about (as well as many other factorss too numerous to name here) people deciding to take better care of themselves and being active participants in their HEALTH. It is about American patient families and docctors agreeing that we hav "done all that we can do" and letting our dear family member die with dignity. It is about doctors saying they don't know when they don't know and letting the patient know that another study is not going to add anything. It is about the insurers forgetting abvout the shareholders when it comes to health insurance. It is about primary care physicians being given the time to spend quality time with their patients, and being compensated on par with "specialists" to do it. The President and Dr. Gawande talk about incentivizing outcomes, but they don't tell you how difficult it is to get at and validate that outcome data (we're having difficulty measuring processes that should lead to good outcomes).
Yes, the "American Medical Industry" gravy train must come to halt. it is un-sustainable. But, it cannot be balance solely on the backs of physicians for lack of a strong enough lobby. Americans have to take care of their caretakers, and implore their phycians to negotiate in good faith, and support their efforts to earn a good living for their efforts. They should also hold their Senaors' and Congresspersons' feet to the fire to hammer out a proposal that is fair to all parties involved keeping patient care at the forefront. Everyone is going to have to give something up to get this done properly. Universal Healthcare is not "free" healthcare.
